Is it possible to make water that pushes a player with its flow?

Trigger_push -> info_null or target_position
the closer the target_position or info_null is to the center of the trigger_push the less force there will be

Won't this require a lot of triggers to make a river flow? How would a player escape the river?

Yes it would need a lot of triggers, Jumping or a ladder? otherwise you couldn't make it posible.

I made a bridge with a river like that for a contest once.

The triggers are quite far away, check the effect yourself, heh
