Well, this is probably the most basic tutorial you will ever see. A lot of maps suffer from a problem that is: the map is way too confuse. Well, I'm one of these guys who prefers to watch and learn and it works, trust me. Lets take a look to ut4_kingdom - simple and genious layout.
The whole map is based on a grid - that's why this map is so awesome and you will never, but NEVER forget where you can go. Your maps should always have a meeting spot for teams, like pillars in ut4_turnpike and bridge in ut4_kingdom. This way your map will be playable in TS & CTF.
BUT
With this technique you still can/should make some kind of an alternative route, maps shouldn't be always a simple grid.
Comments, sugestions and critics are apreciated.

Re: [Tutorial] Basic map layout
Not all good maps have been made by a grid..
Only if you force it to be there...
But mostly this is true..
Although i believe this topic will make lots of new mappers make "Grid-Similar" Layouts, and give up on making alternate routes...

Re: [Tutorial] Basic map layout
Yeah, xandaxs, u right
there are alot of guys who uses simple 4-6 sides maps and in the end the most ones are BORING, i mean for example dressingroom (which i never can understood WHY this map is in the standard-maps) it is absolutly simple and (my mind) absolutly boring.
but with knife only and 2-4 good and cool players it makes fun - but not with more players or other options

Re: [Tutorial] Basic map layout
I dont want to get all nostagic about this but when Picola and I ran the AZLCMB1 bot servers, on a saturday morning we'd set up Dressing room CTF low gravity (80 is perfect) with 16 level 4 bots on the red team and 16 humans on the blue team.
The bots loved the low gravity and shoot like aimbotters on level 4, you needed to get a good run up, bounce off a couple of walls and grab the flag before 16 crazy bots would kill you.
I got an email from a guy on gametracker a couple of weeks ago telling me how he loved Saturday mornings on our server because of that.
