Custom Skyboxes by Bin

Post by Bin »

Greetings one and all,

I have been playing Urban Terror for ages and only now have come to understand that folks are still making new maps for this and related games. More importantly, I have learned that there is a use for an old passion of mine in making custom maps.

For years I have generated renders in Terragen under the name stbc and know now that I can use this program to make skyboxes.

I would like to offer my services to any and all that would like to use my work. For a while I was pretty well-known in the Terragen world.

Feel free to look over some of my images here: http://stevecourtright.blogspot.com/201 ... using.html Let me know what you think!

Contact me here directly or through my blog to see what we can do together.

VTY,
Bin

First of all, welcome to CMM! It's great to have you here!
And second, thank you for this offering of your services and talent to our enthusiastic mappers, it's always great to find people like you!

I took a look at your previous works on that webpage link you provided and they look amazing! You're really really good! I'm looking forward for us working together.
You should stop by IRC once in a while, we're always there having fun and talking.

#cmm @ Quakenet, stop by ;)

Once again, thank you! :)

Awesome renders, but as they are right now, that is all they are, awesome renders.

A skybox looks a bit different and there's a special procedure used to create the 6 images used as an actual skybox.

Now if you are willing to create that kind of sxyboxes, well that would be fantastic.

The basic principle is simple, create an environment, and then take "photos" of it via terragen built in camera.
You need 6 photos, top, bottom, left, right, back and front.
So it's just a matter of angles, or on other words rotating the camera by 90 degrees until you all sides have been covered.

Maybe this will help.

Thanks, Rayne, for the vote of confidence.

I gleaned the basic procedure from this site a few days ago and have already created a set of 6 renders according to the tutorial. They are being assembled by a member of my UrT clan into a new map being created by JohnnyEnglish. So, as you can see, I already have my toe in the (virtual) water, so to speak.

Looking forward to learning more, seeing what I can do and making a contribution!

And thanks for the link.
Cheers.

I've snaffled bin to help inquey and myself finish off the nightmare xmas map. We might even be able to improve my terragen tutorial.

But something bin said in his initial post was suprising, "I have been playing Urban Terror for ages and only now have come to understand that folks are still making new maps for this and related games".

I wonder how much more talent there is out there in the community? Not only mappers but artists to add that touch of class to level design, sound and lighting specialists, even project managers to help organise the construction of maps because lets be honest, collaboration projects usually fail because nobody thought the project through.

If you know anyone with skills that could enhance our maps, invite them over. We don't have cookies but we're a nice little community and our irc channel is probably the funniest/chattiest place out there.
